Sample sTUDENT FILMS

These student films, produced as part of my undergraduate courses in Visual Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam, in collaboration with the Documentary Institute Amsterdam (DIA), demonstrate how the camera can be used as a tool of exploration and collaboration in anthropological research. The short introductory course ‘Visual Methods and Techniques’ started with a reading of Marcel Mauss' Techniques of the Body, after which students worked on an elicitation-based film project to study a seemingly mundane body technique from the unfamiliar perspectives of a research participant. In the follow-up course ‘Visual Ethnography and Anthropological Research’, students worked around themes of place/space and ‘place-making practices’.
